You are a young reporter for the Amherst Daily News. You have just been informed that the mysterious woman that used to lower cookies in a basket from her bedroom window to you and the other children of the town has died. Your boss has just given you the assignment to write an article eulogizing this woman, Emily Dickinson, for the newspaper. All that you know about her is that she was the daughter of a prominent lawyer, and that she must have liked children.

Task:

Your job is to research, write, and edit an article eulogizing Emily Dickinson. Your article should include the following information: (1) family: living and deceased, (2) address, (3) education (4) church and civic membership, (5) personal accomplishments, (6) place of burial, and (7) and a photograph of the deceased.

Process:

Portion 1:

Each student must obtain note-taking sheets. The number of sheets needed will depend on the number of sources used.

Students will then spend time researching the on-line resources and any other appropriate resources for the required information.

  • personal accomplishments
  • place of burial
  • photograph of the deceased

Any pertinent information will be noted on the note-taking sheets and pictures/images saved on a disk. Do not forget to cite the resources used. This includes image documentation.

At the end of the researching portion of the assignment, the notes will be given to the teacher for evaluation.

 

 

Portion 2:

Each student will obtain an outline form.

Students will spend time organizing the information onto the outline. If more information is needed, the students must go back to the on-line resources and/or multimedia center to locate the missing information.

At the end of the outlining portion of the assignment, the outline will be given to the teacher for evaluation.

 

 

Portion 3:

Students will begin composing the eulogy using their notes and outline as a guide.

When the first draft is complete, each student will obtain a peer revision and editing form.

With the aid of the editing form, each student will have a classmates proof-read the article. The proof-reader will make comments on the peer revision and editing form.

Each student will finalize his/her article using the suggestions made during peer revision.

The article will be formatted in the style of a newspaper article using Microsoft Word and the column feature or Microsoft Publisher and the newspaper templates.

Once the article is printed, it along with the revision sheet will be turned in for evaluation.

Evaluation:

The outline, notes, rough draft, and peer revision and editing will each count as a daily grade. The final draft of the article will count as a test grade. The final draft will be graded by the rubric.
